Minnesota Vikings Football

The Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL as a 1961 expansion team. The Vikings have won their division 16 times, and became the first team to appear in four Super Bowls, but the club also became the first one to lose four Super Bowls. The nickname Vikings came about because so many people in Minnesota and the surrounding area traced their heritage to Scandinavia.

Leading the way for the Vikings in 1969 was a ferocious defense known as the Purple People Eaters that holds opponents to just 133 points on the season. The Chiefs squashed their dreams in the Super Bowl defeating them 23-7. The addition of RB Chick Foreman who wins both Offensive Rookie and Player of the Year honors is just the spark the Minnesota Vikings offense needed in 1973 to make it to the Super Bowl again. They lost to the Miami Dolphins 24-17. The Vikings made it back to the big game again in 1974, but again couldn't pull out a Super Bowl victory. They were beat by the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-6. In the Super Bowl for the 3rd time in 4 years in 1976, the aging Vikings new time was growing short as they tried to win their first Lombardi Trophy in 4 trips. They lost again with the Oakland Raiders beating them 32-14.

The Minnesota Vikings recorded their best year ever in 1998. Randy Moss would become an instant sensation winning the Offensive Rookie f the year while racking up 1,313 yards and 17 TDs, as the Vikings won the NFC Central by posting a franchise best record of 15-1. In the NFC Championship, the Atlanta Falcons beat them in overtime 30-27.

The Vikings have one of the highest winning percentages in the NFL. Since they merged with the AFL, they have qualified for the playoffs 25 times and has 12 members in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
