Major League Baseball consists of two leagues - the National League and the American League. The league considers 1869 to be its founding year with the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, were established. The first game in the National League was played on April 22, 1876 in Philadelphia. It is often considered the beginning of the MLB. The Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs can trace their origins back to the National Association.
The modern day MLB starts with spring training that usually lasts about two months before the season starts. It traditionally ends around the first week of April. The MLB regular season consists of 162 games per team that ends on the first Sunday in October. Teams compete for four playoff berths in their league and ultimately to play in the World Series.
