The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was founded in 1947-48 by Bill France, Sr. The points system was written on a bar room napkin and the original NASCAR had three divisions: Modified, Roadster and Strictly Stock. Stock car racing in the United States has its origins in bootlegging during the Prohibition. Bootleggers needed small, fast cars to evade the police while transporting their moonshine. By the late 1940s, races using these cars were being run for pride and profit.

The three largest racing series sanctioned by NASCAR are the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series, and the Camping World Truck Series. Sprint Cup is the highest level of competition. It is the most popular and profitable. NASCAR has a huge following with some of the most passionate fans. It is one of the most viewed professional sports in terms of television ratings, but there is nothing better than being at the track. So, grab your NASCAR tickets and head to the excitement!
