Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated R&B, originated in the 1940s. The meaning has changed throughout the decades. In the early 1950s, if was frequently applied to blues music. In the mid-1950s, it referred to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. In the 1970s, it was a term for soul and funk and in the 1980s, it became known as "Contemporary R&B".
There have been many famous R&B singers including Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry and Nat King Cole, to name a few. Today, R&B refers to a style of African American music originating after the demise of disco in the 1980s. Contemporary R&B artists include Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Usher, Rihanna and Mariah Carey. Mainstream R&B is based more on rhythm.
