Professional boxing emerged in the early 20th century. Most professional bouts took place in the United States and Britain. Champions of the era included Jim Jeffries and Bob Fitzsimmons. In 1908, Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight champion and a highly controversial figure in that racially charged era. Prizefighting champions were huge sports celebrities and a championship had a huge public interest in this era.
